Los Angeles duo Split Secs return to the world of vinyl-based, dance floor devastation after their recent remix of FOMO's "House Of Love," which features none other than soul diva supreme, Chaka Khan on vocal duties. Their shiny, new opus is "Rhummy," a seductive foray into techno-tinged, controlled madness. This new single contains five tracks, four mixes of "Rhummy" and the track, "System Musica." The digital release comes with an extra rendition of "Rhummy" by Muzik Non Stop aka Layne Fox, of modern, disco disciples 40 Thieves. The original mix of "Rhummy" is a moody, lurching and low-slung thing, designed for dark corners on dark dancefloors. A tight, vacuum packed kick drum rolls under skittering hi-hats and grinding synth textures, a simulated train alarm and a minimal, but tough, and ominous bassline. This will ease you into the AM nicely. Dublin's deep crate digging Compassion Crew provides a version that deviates slightly from the original, but adds a whispered, sung and, generally unsettling, vocal snippet that should make it a 5 AM favorite. On side two Tom Noble's mix is up next and this sees the seasoned vinyl aficionado and Superior Elevation label and store proprietor deviating away from his disco-derived dogma. He delivers what sounds like a punchy hybrid of melodic techno and old school NY/NJ garage being willfully steered into a modern context and bathed in a wash of bubbling, sweeping synth work. Split Secs decide that you haven't been funked enough and finishes up with "System Musica," a latin-infused, techy bounder that will sound as good in San Antonio, Texas as it does in San Antonio, Ibiza. It's nice and drummy and the spoken-word Spanish vocal really sets off its sparseness. It's a great DJ tool and a stand out tune on its own.
